Sand Whiting

Family:Sillaginidae
Description:Sillago ciliata or Sand Whiting are silvery whit in colour with plain yellowish sides. They have Dark blotches at the base of the pectoral fins and this is what distinguishes them from their cousins yellow-finned whiting (Sillago schomburgkii). They have a elongated only slightly compressed body and a long and conical snout. Sand whiting feed on marine invertebrates including crustaceans (yabbies, prawns and soldier crabs), polychaete worms and bivalve molluscs (pipis). They use their long snout to forage through sand and mud looking for food. Sand Whiting are sometimes also known as Summer Whiting and Blue Nose Whiting.
