Pro Reports - Alpine Angler Snowy Mountains Report 8th October 2007

The latest report from the Snowy Mountains Region has been published by the team at the Alpine Angler

We have had some excellent reports this week. The wind was very trying over the last week, but many anglers still persevered and most caught fish. Hopefully with improved conditions the fishing will improve too...

Fly Fishing
Rivers - We have had reports of excellent numbers of Rainbows in the lower Eucumbene which have been biting readily and although some are a little small still provide a ton of fun...
Lake Eucumbene - Fly reports from Eucumbene suggest not a lot of change but the fishing has continued to improve, and while not all the fish are huge there have been some better Browns lurking around...
Lake Tantagara - There have been good numbers of fish on the chew in Tantangara and most of these have been surface feeders. A must look at spot after you fish the rivers in the morning...
Lake Jindabyne - Fishing has been great in Jindabyne with both Polaroiding and blind searching taking some fish...

Trolling and Spinning Lake Eucumbene - With the rising water launching will become progressively easier. The banks are hard so the only thing to be careful of is that there is enough water under the motor when launching...
Lake Jindabyne - With the rising levels the weed beds are the place to troll. Being in close is the key as is an early start. If you really want to catch a fish being on the water as the light starts to improve is essential...

Bait Fishing
Bait fishing has been absolutely outstanding in Eucumbene with good Browns and Rainbows comiong in from the Old Adaminaby area. Powerbait and Scrubworms have been the best baits. Stimulate has been an excellent addition to Scrubworms and those anglers using it have reported a jump in their catch rates...

The upper Mitta Mitta River around Anglers Rest is flowing nicely and producing brown trout to around a kilogram on average...

The lower Mitta Mitta River from Mitta Mitta is flowing at 200 megalites and is a bit muddy this week...

Lake Dartmouth is holding steady at around 14% capacity with good stocks of wild browns on hand to delight any angler's weekend of effort

Pro Reports - Mudgee Region Report September 2007

Oil your reels, clean the boat, dig up some worms 'cause spring is here! The weather is warming up, the fish are coming onto the bite...

Windamere Dam - It was a glorious Spring Day on Sunday for Round 3 of the Fish N Trips Fishing Club and Challenge. The water at the dam was clear with visibility of a metre or so and no trace of algae, the wind was pretty good for most of the day only picking up around lunch time but not making the fishing too uncomfortable.

Middle Cudgegong - Trout Season Opening - The start of the NSW General Trout Streams fishing season is midnight Friday night. This will affect the Cudgegong River between the weir at Lawson Park and Windamere Dam wall as it will now be open to fishing. It has been closed to all fishing since the long weekend in June...

Burrendong Dam - Many reports have been coming out of Burrendong Dam of really hot fishing from the Wellington side and a trip we took out there over the weekend only confirmed the reports...

Other
The Gillham boys Harry and George accompanied their father Rob and Grandfater Malcom Roth on their first ever western water fishing trip. The boys fished really well with Harry catching a total of 11 fish and George 11.5.
Mud Spin Lures - Young local angler and entrepreneur Nathan Innes has launched his range of Mud Spin Lures consisting of Traditional Spinners and Spinnerbaits.
Catties in Western waters - As part of the new fishing rules it is now prohibited to take Catfish both freshwater and eel-tailed from western flowing rivers and unlisted western dams.

Yabby traps rules - A rule that a lot of people also may not realize is that it is illegal to use yabby traps in the rivers around our region. We are in the declared platypus waters and therefore you cannot use yabby traps in rivers in this area.

Pro Reports - Alpine Angler Snowy Mountains Fishing Report 31/07/2007

The fishing over the weekend was generally quite good. The Soft plastic spinning in Eucumbene continues to be a great method of catching some big numbers of fish and the polaroiding and bait fishing in Jindabyne has been good too.

Fly Fishing
Rivers - ALL CLOSED TILL 29TH SEPTEMBER
Lake Eucumbene - Polaroidng has been quite good around the Dam wall with some very big fish being spotted cruising in close. There are not huge numbers and the steep banks can be a challenge but the chance of hooking a monster is high...
Lake Tantagara - No reports from Tantangara.
Lake Jindabyne - No reports from the weekend but some great fishing will ensue as more fish drop out of the river and into the lake. There have been a number of Browns caught in recent times that have not run to spawn...

Trolling and Spinning Lake Eucumbene - Old Adaminaby's ramp is still very good and is suitable for boats up to the 5 and a bit metre mark. A 4WD is a definite advantage with the larger boats as the water is a little shallow so being able to drive out into the water can be necessary...
Lake Jindabyne - There have been some real quality fish from Jindabyne this week. Early and late has been the best with all methods, flat line, lead core, and downrigging producing fish...
Blowering - We don't tend to get many reports from Blowering but this one was emailed to me by Brett Wood and just shows that there is some great fishing to be had there...

Bait Fishing
Bait fishing has been excellent with some good catches of mostly Rainbows in Jindabyne, and Eucumbene. Powerbait and Scrubworms have been the best baits...

Middle Cudgegong - Still closed to all fishing until 29th September.

Windamere Dam - The fishing has slowed down considerably at Windamere over the course of the past month. Expect the bait fishing captures of silver's to rise over the next month as this is traditionally the better time for silvers when the yella's drop off...

Dunn's Swamp - Dunn's has failed to produce quality fish all spring/summer. Usually at its peak over this period the impoundment has failed to produce any notable captures...

Burrendong Dam - 'Well be able to get the boat in.. trust me' says Peter Orr. So off the Orr clan goes to Burrendong for a spot of fishing...

Middle Cudgegong - The trout are getting harder and harder to catch as the season goes on. The fish are still responding to dries in the late afternoon...

Lower Cudgegong - Fishing a secret location, Anthony Dorman from out Dunedoo way and Mark Coggan from Dubbo got onto some of the hottest cod fishing of the season...

Other Waterways - I hadn't been down the Bridle Track in a while so I took an exploratory look out there the other day with a few mates...

Other News - Local hospitals were kept busy over the Christmas period with plenty of fishing related injuries to attend to...

Court House Hotel Fishing Club Carp Bash - The Court House Hotel Fishing Club Carp Bash came to a close on Sunday after a month of competitive fishing with the final weigh in and BBQ...

Pro Reports - Shore-based fishing report January/Febuary 2007

The latest shore-based report by Gary Brown has just been published:

Usually the months of January and February are two months of the year when the wind and the weather are fairly predictable, but with the weather being the way it is over the last 12 months, who knows...

Question and Answer of the Month - Ron Cummings from Rockdale has heard about Tube Worms and how good they are. What he would like to know is what they are all about and where can you get them?

Beach spot of the month – Maroubra Beach / Sydney - Now this extremely popular beach for swimmers and surfers is also a very good producer of Sand Whiting, Yellowfin Bream, Tailor, Australian Salmon, Mulloway and Beach Worms...

Land-based spot of the month – Captain Cook Bridge / Sydney - The Captain Cook Bridge is great example of what structure means to a Mulloway...

Bait Recipes - Over the years I have been asked "What types of specially prepared baits do I use for Yellowfin Bream?" Now as a kid I use to...

Getting the Best of Fishing after Dark on the Beach - You may not class this as a technique, but more of a matter of timing. I have found that when fishing for Mulloway off the beach at night I prefer to fish about...

What's New - ave you ever wanted to go for a fish off the beach for Yellowfin Bream and Sand Whiting and none of your favourite tackle shops have had any beach worms, the tide is way too high for catching your own beach worms or you can't catch beach worms anyway?...

New Locations in Tropical North Queensland

Bad Bubby has submitted some new locations in Weipa - Tropical North Queensland.

Take a look:

Weipa Jetty (aka Evan's Landing) - Evan's Landing is the main port of call for most travellers fishing land based in Weipa. This jetty offers great opportunities for both bait and lure fishing. Live bait collected locally can do really well.

Rocky Point - Rocky point is characterised by large stones and concrete blocks that were deposited there in conjunction with the now abandoned boat ramp.

Andoom Bridge (or 'Mission Bridge') - As you stand looking at the Andoom bridge there is a sand bar that extends off to your left hand side, this is an excellent fishing spot that is well known by locals and travellers alike.

Red Beach - Red beach is about 500m long and shaped a bit like a horseshoe. The upstream side of the bend is sheltered and is a popular fishing spot for locals.

Thanks to Daniel for sumbitting these locations, you can view Daniel's website at http://www.freewebs.com/badbubby/index.htm

Pro Reports - Mudgee Region Report December 2006

The latest Mudgee Region report by David Smith has just been published:

We have had a couple of good months around Christmas. Nice weather and plenty of fish has kept everyone happy. We are booked up most weekends throughout January and February but there are still spots available.

Windamere Dam - Windamere has been totally on fire this month, literally with bushfires burning in the surrounding hills! The month started with cod season opening...

Dunn's Swamp - The Wollemi National Park was closed for much of the month due to bush fires in the area and subsequently there have been no fishing reports available...

Burrendong Dam - Water has all but dried up in the Mudgee end of Burrendong. Only a trickle remains that apparently heads underground at one point. Small carp are still being caught in the remaining waterholes...

Middle Cudgegong - The middle Cudgegong is still producing quality trout but they are becoming hardewr to catch with the continued fishing pressure...

Lower Cudgegong - Although fairly quiet this month on the lower, Jay Thompson and Jack Leckie had a good session down near Gooree the other day pulling up 6 big catties with the best going 53cm...

Lawson Creek - Due to the effects of the drought, Lawson Creek fishing is limited to the larger waterholes...

Other News - For anyone visiting the Mudgee Region these school holidays the Court House Hotel in conjunction with Fish N Trips will be holding a carp capture competition. Entry is only $2 for kids and $8 dollars for adults, including membership to the Court House Hotel Fishing Club...

Pro Reports - Alpine Angler Snowy Mountains Report 20th December 2006

The latest Snowy Mountains report by The Alpine Angler team has just been published:

There is some fine fishing at the moment in both the rivers and lakes. In fact a white haired gentleman dressed in red and white was recently observed catching a few Rainbows at Lake Eucumbene...

Fly Fishing
Rivers:- River fishing has been very good and although some streams are low there are plenty of fish to be caught. Dry fly fishing has been the best method with loads of beetles, ants and hoppers about...
Lake Eucumbene:- The lake fishing has been generally very good. Loch Style fishing has been good and there have been numbers of beetles in the lanes at times. There have been a heap of hoppers in the grass up high around the lake...
Lake Jindabyne:- The new moon this week will have plenty of good Rainbows and Browns searching the edges early and late in the day. Weed beds are thick in places and these are the areas to concentrate on around evening....
Lake Tantagara:- As in Jindabyne there are some good weed beds in Tantangara with lots of aquatic insects in them. There have been some great hatches and good rises occurring in the evenings with most fish being small Rainbows...

Bait Fishing
Powerbait, Grubs, Mudeyes and Scrub Worms all worked over the last week and the weekend. Powerbait in Lime and Lemon twist has been excellent during the day and most anglers opt for one rod with a Mudeye under a bubble and one with a Scrub Worm or Powerbait on the bottom....

New Fishy Tale - Landbased Weipa Assult

A new story by Bad_Bubby about his most recent assult on Weipa

"During late September 2006 my brother Ryan and myself planned on visiting Weipa for four days. Any trip to the west coast generates considerable excitement and even a sense of expectation in my home in Cairns. My previous Weipa trip took place in late 2003. It was probably one of the most memorable fishing experiences I've had with several excellent barra lure casting sessions, some top queenfish action, and some exhilarating golden trevally jigging. That trip spanned over 14 action packed days fishing at several landbased locations close to the Weipa township. The plan for our recent trip was to return to these spots keeping in mind the successful tides from three years prior..."

Pro Reports - Alpine Angler Snowy Mountains Report 11th December 2006

The latest Snowy Mountains report by The Alpine Angler team has just been published:

It has been very warm over the last week but the fishing has been superb for most anglers. There has been some great baitfishing and trolling along with good flyfishing too.

Fly Fishing
Rivers:- Not much change this week, there is still some excellent fishing in the area with big evening rises of Caddis, Mayflies, Stoneflies, and there are numbers of small hoppers starting to appear...
Lake Eucumbene:- The windlanes have had numbers of fish up on top fishing with a beetle or ant pattern being the fly of choice. There have been some good rises on dark in the Anglers reach arm, although many of these have been small Rainbows...
Lake Jindabyne:- The lake has produced some nice fish again this week, but the evening fishing has been tough at times. There have been some really good rises after dark with fish moving everywhere on the surface but they have been difficult to tempt.

Bait Fishing
Some really good numbers of nice fish were coming in on bait over the weekend. Powerbait, Grubs, Mudeyes and Scrub Worms all worked over the last week and the weekend. Powerbait in Lime and Lemon twist has been excellent during the day and most anglers opt for one rod with a Mudeye under a bubble and one with a Scrub Worm or Powerbait on the bottom...

New Location on the Fraser Coast

A new locations has been added to the Fraser Coast region

Take a look:

Fishy Tales - Woodgate Beach

A new story by one of our Members about Woodgate Bridge

"Woodgate Beach is a sleepy little town lying between Burrum Heads & Bunderberg Qld, about 4 hours north of Brisbane. It's a place where no one seems to be in a great hurry & the kangaroo's have free roam. It has a caravan park, local shop, news agent, pub & a bowls club, but besides the residents that's really about it and it seems to be missed by most of the tourism and development of the surrounding area's. The beach it's self is sandy white, with crystal clear water, that is home to both Whale's & Dolphins alike."

Pro Reports - Snowy Mountains Report 8th August 2006

The latest Snowy Mountains report by Scott Mitchell has just been published:

"Not a lot of change again this week, although we did get some good reports back in from those who got out on the water. The recent rain has brought the main rivers up and has dropped the bulk of the browns back into the lakes after spawning - with our first poalaroding reports back in from the weekend. So it's worth a look every time you see a big high pressure system on the map from now on."

Fish-e-Fax is a fortnightly round-up of recreational fishery management issues published by the department of Primary Industries.

Here's what's in this fornights issue:

Increased abalone theft results in reduced bag limits - On 1 September 2006 the Victorian Government will implement regulations for recreational abalone fishing that will aid in protecting Victoria’s valuable abalone stocks.

Routine inspections uncover an illegal fisher - A Craigieburn man pleaded guilty in court earlier this year to two charges: fishing without a valid recreational fishing licence and knowingly making a false or misleading statement.

Surry River update - Last week the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority (Glenelg Hopkins CMA) introduced pumps to remove water from the Surry River in an effort to alleviate rising waters.

July stocking figures - Victorian waters stocked between 1 and 7 July 2006.

NEW!! David Smith Mudgee Region Report July 2006

We are lucky enough here at Shore Fishing Australia to now have David Smith from from Fish N Trips in Mudgee writting reports on the NSW Mudgee Region for us. Keep an eye on the Pro Reports section for his latest contributions.

Here is his first report:

"It's been a month of mixed feelings around the Mudgee Region this week. The rain has been a godsend to local farmers who have been praying for rain for several years now and don't want it to stop, whereas the keen fisho's wouldn't mind a break for a week or two so they can get out and fish! The cold weather has kept most people rugged up inside and its been the committed and lucky who have braved the conditions to come up trumps this month. With the poor local conditions and shutdown fish most anglers have ventured further a field in search of fish or two."

Pro Reports - Shore-based fishing report August/September 2006

The latest shore-based report by Gary Brown has just been published:

"When I looked back over the entries that I have made in my diaries over the years. August and September have been the months that there has been a fair bit of wind about. Especially from the west. But this should not deter you from getting out there and chasing the fish species of your choice. During these months I will target yellowfin bream, Australian salmon, tailor, silver trevally, snapper, luderick, drummer, squid and garfish.

To help you get out there and chase a few of the above fish species, while at the same time get out of the westerly winds I will list a few of the places that I will target them during the months of August and September."

Hopeful early dioxin test results on some recreational fish species

There are hopeful signs that the dietary advice on some pelagic species of fish in some parts of Sydney Harbour could be changed with dioxin tests on some species continuing to return relatively low results.
With almost 20% of tests on species of fish completed, dioxin levels appear to be well below the elevated levels found in bream and prawns, although the figures in other bottom feeders like mullet and squid continue to be high.
Early batches of preliminary test samples indicate that species of fish like Yellowtail, Kingfish and Trumpeter Whiting have much lower levels of dioxin.

Dioxin news hits home for fishermen

The Sydney Morning Herald has published an article on Dioxin levels in Sydney Harbour.

"EVERY day for 50 years Charlie Aloe would bring fish he caught in Sydney Harbour home for a family dinner with his wife, Francesca, and their children.
Yesterday, as the 77-year-old was having surgery for bowel cancer at Concord Hospital, Francesca, 68, was a few doors down receiving the news that the level of dioxin in her body was more than 10 times the average."

"Bit of a damp weekend in the mountains, but we're not going to complain about a bit of rain! Not many reports back in again this week - BUT I did get out for a fish myself with Mark Berg from the Ultimate Fishing DVD series and had some great fishing - check full report below.
We have seen some of the best fishing I can remember on lake Eucumbene and to a lesser degree lake Jindabyne over the last few months and it should continue right through winter - with the lakes remaining open all year round. Those coming down for the last week of the NSW school holiday period should pack a fishing rod. The next class to be held at Windybank's Bait and Tackle at 523 Pacific Highway at Colah (9477 1655) will start on Thursday the 19th of October at 7.00pm and run for three consecutive Thursday nights.

New Article - Setting up for Soft Plastics

This is the next article in Fishin Dan's beginners guide series - Setting up for Soft Plastics

For me, fishing with Soft Plastics is one of the most satisfying way to catch fish. Convincing a fish to bite a small soft piece of floppy rubber is not as hard as you would think.
To fish efficiently and comfortably with Soft Plastics, you need to have a setup that will allow you to cast all day long (If you put in that much time!). You will also be casting fairly light weights, so the setup needs to be able to cast the light weights as far as possible.

"Well that's it for another season on our rivers, with mixed reports coming back in from those who braved the conditions over the closing weekend. The boys who caught the BIG ones last week in the Eucumbene river Rob Leghorn, Lance and Wade did well for the week with over 200 fish being landed & released between them, commenting that it was the best run of BIG fish they had seen in 15 years. Rob also lost another big fish which they estimated at over 8kgs!!!!"

Snowy Mountains Report 5th June 2006

The latest Snowy Mountains report by Scott Mitchell has just been published:

"The great fishing continues on both lakes Eucumbene & Jindabyne with good numbers and size of fish being caught regardless of method. We had some reasonable rain on Friday & Saturday with up to 20mm falling up in the hills before going to snow on high ground. Both the Eucumbene & Thredbo rivers rose enough to get some more browns to run and we have had quite a few good reports back in from those who fished the rivers over the weekend. Best fish heard of so far was a 5.2kg brown from the Eucumbene river mouth on fly last Sunday morning, although we had quite a few fish caught up at Anglers Reach this weekend to 4kgs around the mouth of the Eucumbene river. We could still do with some more rain to get a real run of fish happening so cross the fingers, pray and rub your favourite talisman and lets hope it happens before the rivers close next Monday the 12th of June."

New Location in the Georges River region

A new locations has been added to the Georges River region.

Take a look:

Tom Ugly's Bridge - Tom Ugly's Bridge offers many fishing opportunities for land based anglers. The bridge, like most bridges and a lot of man made structure in general, affects how the water moves as the current flows around its pylons. As the tide rises or falls, holes and eddies are created on the down current side of the pylons. Fish will often sit in these eddies to preserve energy as they wait for food to be delivered by the current.

New Locations in the Sydney area

A few new locations have been added to some of the regions in the Sydney area.

Take a look, they are:

Clarke's Point Reserve (Sydney Harbour) - Clarke's Point Reserve on Clarke's Point near Woolwich is pretty much directly where the Lane Cove River and the Parramatta River meet. This makes it ideal for targeting most of the species available in Sydney Harbour.
Fig Tree Bridge (Lane Cove River) - The Fig Tree Bridge crosses the Lane Cove River near Hunters Hill. You can fish from both sides of the bridge, wading the sand flats on the northern side or fishing the bays from the waters edge on the southern side.
Putney Park (Parramatta River) - Putney Park is a waterfront park with heaps of play equipment for kids, wading pools and electric BBQs. The Parramatta Valley Cycleway starts/finishes here and the car ferry that crosses the Parramatta river to Mortlake is not to far away.
Grotto Point (Middle Harbour) - Grotto Point is the headland that separates Middle Harbour and North Harbour. Being on this point gives you access to some deeper water and a major channel for fish movement as they head into or out of Middle Harbour to feed.
Maroubra Beach (Eastern Suburbs) - Maroubra beach is a surf beach not to much short of being 1km in length. At both its northern and southern ends rock formations border the beach. The beach offers some good gutters and formations to fish.

The latest Sydney shore-based report by Gary Brown has just been published:

"Many anglers will have packed up their ready for the coming of winter. In my household this is so far from the truth it's not funny. This is the time of the year that we get out our luderick gear for the estuaries and off the rocks. It is also a time when the heavy drummer gear comes out of hibernation. This is not to say that I don't fish for drummer during the other months of the year, I do, but the gear I use is much lighter. Another couple rock dwelling fish I will chase during the winter months is the groper and snapper. Off the beach I will usually target bream, Australian salmon and tailor."

New Gear & Tackle Review - Shimano Travel Spin Rod

A new review on the Shimano Travel Rod has been added to the Gear & Tackle section.

"With all of the travelling I do for work, I have been lucky enough to visit some amazing places. Some of these places holds fantastic fishing opportunities in the very near vicinity (If not in the city itself!). The problem that I had was that although I had a couple of reels that were suitable for a lot of different fishing styles, I did not have a rod that I could take with me easily. A reel can be wrapped in some clothes and put in your bag, but without going to a full length rod tube, I couldn't take a rod for the reel. There are many disadvantages to having a full length rod tube, and the main one would be the potential for mishandling when travelling frequently."

I was in Cairns for work, and I had organised with a friend of mine (Dan - The local land based expert) to go chasing a few fish during my visit. We spent one night on a beach at the mouth of a creek live baiting for Jacks & Tarpon. I managed instead to catch one giant Pike Eel, and hook a good sized Barra (That I dropped as I missed the strike due to standing a long way from the water, very very scared!). This was my second trip to Cairns, and had still never caught a fish!"

Pro Reports - Snowy Mountains Report 6th Feb 06

The latest Snowy Mountains report has just been published

"What a beautiful weekend it was in the Snowies. Finally a bit of cooler weather and some rain last week saw a few more fish moving . Generally there has been some excellent dry fly fishing on the high country rivers and some top trolling/down rigging on the lakes over the last few weeks. Hoppers & mudeyes have been moving on the lakes and the fish are starting to zone in on them. This will be the pattern until conditions start to cool off in March."

New Gear & Tackle Review - Mitchell Spidercast Pro SCP900

A new review on the Mitchell Spidercast Pro SCP900 has been added to the Gear & Tackle section.

Being a uni student the Calcuttas and Daiwa reels were a bit out of my price range but I noticed a reel marked as 180 dollars looking very similar to a Calcutta 400. The shop assistant handed it over explaining it was a 'Spidercast pro SCP900' one of Mitchell's deluxe big baitcasters. It was their only one in stock and reduced from 260 dollars. The price tag of $180 was only 20 dollars more than I was about to pay to replace the Abu6500. So the decision was effectively made for me. Being a very loyal Abu fan I was quite sceptical of the Mitchell. It looked very classy with aluminium sideplates (like a silver version of a Calcutta 400) but looks are not everything in tackle.

The closure is effective as of today, and will remain in force for three months, or until further expert advice.

New Gear & Tackle Article - Travelling with Equipment

A new article on travelling with equipment has been added to the Gear & Tackle section.

"I've seen fishing rods slammed in car doors, damaged on aeroplanes and broken on boats, seen people trip and drive their rod tip into the ground or walk rod tip first into something whilst not watching where they were going. Just because your rod is in one (or the correct number of pieces) doesn't mean the damage isn't already done, I've seen friends cast only to have the tip of the rod snap off because of damage done in transit. Sometimes a fishing rod can be a big purchase; you can spend in excess of a thousand dollars on a quality rod so it's worthwhile protecting your investment, and worse than that, there's nothing worse than getting somewhere and the action going crazy only to discover you have nothing to fish with."

New Technique – High Speed Spinning

A new article on High Speed Spinning from jetties has been added to the Techniques section.

"Coastline Jetties can often be baitfish magnets, providing food, shelter and safety for smaller fish species. These baitfish then provide a food source for bigger fish species turning the jetty into something like a seafood buffet. Going after the pelagic species that are attracted by the baitfish gathering nearby jetties can be a thrilling way to fish."

New Technique - Sooty Technique

A new article has been added under the Techniques section with information on targeting Sooty Grunters.

To the uninitiated fishing for Sooty Grunter in the streams of Northern Queensland will most likely involve a lot of guesswork and random casting. However, to experienced Sooty fishers there are proven ways of hooking up to these aggressive little fish.

New Locations on Bribie Island

After spending some time on Bribie Island over the Christmas period I have added some new locations. Information was collected from the locals and of course good old ‘research’.

Check them out, they are:
Bribie Island Canals - Bribie Island has man made canals running through out it streets. The man made structures of these canals make great home for smaller fish which in turn attracts larger ones.
Bribie Island Bridge. - The Bribie Island Bridge is the bridge between Bribie Island and the mainland. It’s pylons provide fishing for Bream and Flathead.
Bongaree Jetty - The Bongaree Jetty is south of the Bribie Island bridge and juts out into Bribie Passage and can give you access to deeper water than fishing the beach can.
Sylvan Beach - Sylvan Beach is a long sandy beach on Bribie passage. The water in front of the beach has many sand bars which create gutters for predators to hide in.
South Point - South Point is a long sandy beach that curves around the southern end of Bribie Island on the Bribie passage side.
Red Beach - Red Beach is a long stretch of sandy beach running along the southern side of Bribie Island between Skirmish Point and Bald Point.
Skirmish Point - Skirmish Point is a sandy point on the south eastern side of Bribie Island bordering the Ocean Beach and Woody Bay.
The Ocean Beach - The Ocean beach is a surf beach on the eastern side of Bribie Island and is great with a 4wd. You can also walk and fish the beach.
White Patch - White Patch is the northern most suburb of Bribie Island on the Bribie Passage side. It can be quieter with less people and boat traffic than some of the other areas of the island.
Spinnaker Sound Marina - The Spinnaker Sound Marina is a good place to find Poddy Mullet for bait as well as fish around the boats and creeks.

New Article - Exploring local waterways...

The day was hot and sunny as I walked along the bike track. The small river running alongside the track was getting fuller as the tide came in. I had previously caught a nice flathead in this river a few days before, and was keen to find out what else was in the river. Armed with some Soft Plastics, I was ready to take on whatever I could find!

New Location in Newcastle

A new location has been added in Newcastle...
Stockton breakwall is made of large stone and cement blocks dropped into place. This makes loads of room for smaller fish to hide and live in which in turn attracts larger predators.

New Story - Dedication

I love it when someone has a passion for something and is really dedicated to achieving that goal. Some people have such dedication and passion they will pursue their goal at all costs. One such occasion I witnessed makes quite an amusing tale.

Noosa National Park - The Noosa National Park offers many rocky edges where you can access good fishing water.
Noosa`s Main Beach Break wall - The Main Beach break wall is a medium length break wall extending out from Noosa`s main beach offering access to deeper water than the beach.

Noosa Sound - Noosa Sound is part of the Noosa River. Water flows around from the river mouth into this area where there is little current.
Woods Bay - A bay of settled water near the mouth of the Noosa River. A good place for fish to come in and find food.

New Article - Noosa By Foot

Noosa is nestled in beautiful sparkling Laguna Bay, on the northern part of the Sunshine Coast in South Eastern Queensland. Despite the volume of people that visit the area, the water is still classed as some of the least polluted on the coast, and thus excellent opportunities exist for the versatile flyrodder. Although the freshwater river and impoundment fishing can be staggering, and the offshore scene can be phenomenal, this article focuses on the many areas and species one can target on foot within an easy walk from the main street. As a bonus to families, the main beaches are normally quite safe and there are plenty of activities for families in the area.

New Recipe - Crumby Calamari

Squid, they are fun to catch, make great bait, and better still are fantastic to eat. Next time you catch a few good size squid, take the head and wings for bait and keep the rest for a feed. Here is one of my favourite ways to cook up a good catch of squid, I call it Crumby Calamari.

Product Review - Talon RA International Trave

After my 5wt fly rod had a small accident, involving a car door, a slam, and a lot of well chosen words, I had the perfect excuse to do some shopping. My first stop was to my good friend Henk's. He knows his fly rods and I knew he'd point me in the right direction. I had two main requirements for my new rod. Firstly weight - I needed a rod heavy enough for some light salt work, and light enough to hit some trout in dams, so another 5 or 6 weight it would have to be. Secondly - because I like to take it travelling and because my usual mode of transport is a motor cycle, I wanted something that would break down into enough pieces to fit into a small travel case and be easily carried, after all I didn't want a repeat of the car door incident.

New Article - Night fishing for Trevally

Lately I have been having fun chasing silver Trevally off my local wharf. Silver Trevally are a great little fighting fish that are available throughout most of Sydney Harbour and similar water ways. They can be a lot of fun to catch, and provide a pretty good feed too.
